5 Ways to Keep Healthy at Work


Without our health we wouldn’t be able to work, and I’m sure many of us don’t want to work simply to pay financially, as well as personally for our poor health. Working for an average of 40 hours per week can easily cause physical and mental fatigue, in addition your workplace can also be a prime site for colds and flus. There is no doubt that sitting or standing for long periods of time can cause different kinds of pain and disadvantages to your health. Safe to say that there are times when many of us ignore symptoms and power through to meet that deadline. Alternatively, there are times when many of us may not even recognize the unhealthy way we work. Experts say there are many things professionals can do to make their workplaces healthier and incorporate health into their work life. The following ways are simple tips for keeping healthy whilst at work.

1. Keep your Body Hydrated

There are different benefits of drinking water; it can help keep your energy up, reduce headaches and allow you of feeling full (sometimes thirst is being mistaken by hunger). In the workplace where deadlines, client calls, meetings and conferences arises, drinking the recommended eight glasses of can definitely be a challenge. Tip: Have a drink bottle especially for work and fill it up every morning. This is a great habit to get into every day and first thing in the morning. If you leave your drink bottle on your desk, you’re bound to be reminded to drink water numerous times throughout the day. This will also give you sufficient energy levels throughout the day. If you want to add a little bit of twist, get creative and squeeze a lemon into the water.

2. Just keep moving.

It is important to leave your desk or workplace during meal breaks. Try to take your lunch outside your office where you can walk for a few minutes, breathe some fresh air or try something different at that new healthy restaurant around the corner. This will help improve your blood circulation and boost your immune system, as well as giving yourself a mental break. You can also make your workplace your mini gym by trying to do sit ups in between your client calls, do some stretching and breathing exercises. These could help you minimize stress and help you freshen up your mind.

3. Plan Your Meals

It’s easy to have that biscuit with your coffee, or eat that chocolate for your 3pm sugar hit, but to avoid the vending machines and other source of unhealthy snacks in your workplace. Before heading to your office, it could be helpful to pack your healthy meals for break time. By planning your meals including your snacks, you can help yourself fuel up and stay energized, loaded with vitamins and minerals plus it will help you save money, which is an added bonus. If you plan out your week—including your meals—ahead of time, you’ll find it easier to stay on track.

4. Keep Everything Clean

Germs are microorganisms that exist all around us and is invisible to human’s naked eye. They live in many places like your table, computers, skin, water and many places around us. When germs find a place that suit them, they multiply and set up home for themselves. Sanitizing your desktop every day is the best way to remove germs from clogging up. Keep alcohol and disinfectant wipes in your desk which you can use every day.

5. Get your Flu Vaccine Shot

It is always a great idea to speak to your GP about receiving a yearly flu vaccination.
